The Los Angeles Kings have not offered a contract to back-up goaltender Jamie Storr, greatly improving the chances of Manchester goalie Cristobal Huet to go West into Storr's role and creating a wide-open goalie sweepstakes for the AHL Monarchs.
Monarchs goalie Travis Scott, who shared time with Huet this past season, is an unrestricted free agent without a Kings or Monarchs deal at this point.
Scott, who in the past two seasons has produced some of the longest shutout streaks in the modern day AHL, has not cracked the NHL in three seasons with the Kings.
Huet, making about a half-million dollars a season, has a year left on his Kings contract and represents a far more economical back-up than the pricey Storr, who was earning more than a million a season.
The Kings signed former Flyers goalie Roman Cechmanek for $3 million earlier in June as their number one goalie replacing free agent Felix Potvin.
"Huet will have a good shot as our number two goalie," said Kevin Gilmore, the Los Angeles Kings assistant GM and the top hockey man overseeing the Monarchs.
Gilmore and director of player personnel Bill O'Flaherty were competing in the annual memorial Ace Bailey charity golf tournament at Manchester Country Club yesterday.
For his part, Scott, by rule, could not speak with another hockey club until today. Gilmore said the Kings will "talk" with Scott.
"I'm in a wait-and-see situation," said Scott. "As of right now I'm not going elsewhere. I definitely want to be back in Manchester with the Kings."
But, Gilmore added that he expects many NHL back-up level goalies to be available starting today.
The Kings offered contracts to all of their restricted free agents who played with the Manchester Monarchs. They included forwards Steve Kelly, Ryan Flinn, Kip Brennan, Jerred Smithson, Sean Avery, newcomer at the trade deadline Jon Sim, along with defensemen Richard Seeley and Joe Rullier.
Monarchs already under contract are Huet, forwards Mike Cammalleri, Jared Aulin, Yanick Lehoux and Pavel Rosa, and defensemen Jason Holland, Joe Corvo and Tomas Zizka. Late last week, the Kings signed left wing Chris Schmidt.
